Substitute Educator

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Substitute Teacher

  • Assume responsibility for the health, safety, and welfare of all children in care, especially the members of your assigned class, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.

  • Be willing to play if the children ask you to join them.

  • Connect with each child in your care.

  • Collaboratively work with the educational facilitator to fulfill the mission of Airie.

  • Foster respect for all wildlife.

  • Ensure that the learning environment is free from hazards.
  • Clean the learning environment as needed.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understand play- and nature-based learning.

  • Positive discipline practices that focus on coregulation and connection.

  • Be able and willing to spend a significant portion of time outdoors.

  • Foster and support conflict resolution and emotional regulation skills in children.

  • Be flexible to go with the flow of play in a yes environment.

  • Be able to administer basic first-aid care.

 

Education and Experience

Must:

  • High-school diploma or equivalent

  • Pass a background check

 

Prefer:

  • Nature, survival, or environmental sciences knowledge

  • CPR and First Aid certified

  • Valid Tennessee teacher license

  • Degree in early childhood education, certification or endorsement

  • Experience working with young children

  • Knowledge of Reggio-Emilia, Forest School, and/or Waldorf methods

Work Environment

  • Time is spent on the campus divided between supervision and education of children outdoors.

  • Must be willing to spend long hours standing, hiking, climbing, playing, kneeling, and occasionally lifting or moving approximately 50 pounds.

  • Must be able and willing to change soiled diapers, pull-ups, and assist in toileting in indoor and outdoor settings.

  • Must be able and willing to arrive on site by 9:00 am to prepare for the day and stay until all children have been picked up.

Educational Facilitator

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Educational Facilitator

  • Assist the lead teacher with ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of all children in your care from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.

  • Be willing to play if the children ask you to join them.

  • Connect with each child in your care.

  • Collaboratively work with and support the teacher to fulfill the mission of Airie.

  • Foster respect for all wildlife.

  • Assist in the removal of hazards in the learning environment.
  • Assist with cleaning the learning environment.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of play- and nature-based learning.

  • Positive discipline practices that focus on coregulation and connection.

  • Be able and willing to spend a significant portion of time outdoors.

  • Be flexible in going with the flow of play in a yes environment.

 

Education and Experience

Must:

  • A degree related to early childhood education

Early Childhood Teacher

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Early Childhood Educator

  • Assume responsibility for the health, safety, and welfare of all children in care, especially

        the members of your assigned class, from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm.

  • Design learning invitations derived from daily observations and documentation of play.

  • Be willing to learn the documentation practices and software.

  • Conduct regular critical reflections to provide developmentally appropriate emergent

        curriculum experiences based on the individual child’s needs.

  • Conduct developmentally appropriate assessments of each child.

  • Be passionate about co-learning with children.

  • Be willing to play if the children ask you to join them.

  • Connect with each child, family, and staff member at Airie.

  • Collaboratively work with other staff members to fulfill the mission of Airie.

  • Actively participate in the provided professional development and bonding experiences.

  • Be willing to contribute to caring for the animals on campus and foster respect for all wildlife.

  • Maintain child and family confidentiality.
  • Ensure that the learning environment operates within the Tennessee Department of Human Resources and Education guidelines.
  • Ensure that the learning environment is free from hazards.
  • Clean the learning environment as needed.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understand play-based, nature-based, and self-directed learning.

  • Positive discipline practices that focus on coregulation and connection.

  • Nature, survival, or environmental sciences knowledge.

  • Proficiency with technology, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • Be able and willing to spend a significant portion of time outdoors.

  • Foster and support conflict resolution and emotional regulation skills in children.

  • Be flexible in going with the flow of play in a yes environment.

 

Education and Experience

Must:

  • Bachelor’s degree related to the early childhood education field or have a certification or endorsement.

  • Have a valid Tennessee teacher’s license

  • Be (or be willing to get) CPR and First Aid trained or certified.

  • Experience with children ages three to five.

  • Pass a background check.

 

Prefer:

  • Nature, survival, or environmental sciences knowledge.

  • Advanced degree in early childhood education.

  • Experience working with young children.

  • Knowledge of Reggio-Emilia, Forest School, Wunderled, and/or Waldorf methods.

Work Environment

  • Time is spent on the educational campus divided between desk work, supervision and education of children indoors and outdoors, and research.

  • Provide high-quality educational experiences on a balanced calendar.

  • Must be willing to spend long hours standing, hiking, climbing, playing, kneeling, and occasionally lifting or moving approximately 50 pounds.

  • Must be able and willing to change soiled diapers and pull-ups and assist in toileting in indoor and outdoor settings.

  • They must be able and willing to arrive on site by 9:00 a.m. to prepare for the day and stay until all children have been picked up.

  • Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends as needed.
